FAD-free Programs

FCF offers two fish aggregating device (FAD)-free tuna programs for environmentally conscience brand owners and consumers.

FCF Sustainability Program

We are proud to introduce our FAD-free FCF Sustainability Program (FSP) for skipjack and yellowfin tuna supply, which is sustainable and traceable within our chain of custody.  FSP products are available in raw material, semi-finished and finished states.

The program includes a chain of custody compliance procedures as independently verified by Bureau Veritas International, a world leader in testing, inspecting, and certification services. Our FSP fish is a viable, cost-effective option for sustainability-conscious customers. 30 associated vessels participate in our FSP, including vessels flagged in Taiwan, China, Papua New Guinea, and the United States.

FSP Chain of Custody Oversight

Screen Shot 2015-05-01 at 10.07.00 AMTo ensure proper compliance to our program, FCF has a team of more than 10 personnel dedicated to overseeing each step of FAD-free operations throughout our chain of custody. These include an onsite observer at the cargo discharge, program trainers, program manager, documentation reviewer, and internal auditors. FCF’s chain of custody is set up so that there are stringent procedural and traceable controls in the transfer of fish from one location to another.  If even a single FAD fish is mixed with FAD-free fish, then the entire batch is considered non-FAD-free.

Additionally, FCF successfully implemented as scheduled the  E-Observer program, whereby a video camera is installed and operational 24/7 on the docks of participating vessels.

MSC-certified Skipjack and Yellowfin Tuna

Screen Shot 2015-04-30 at 4.01.33 PMFCF is proud to offer FAD-free skipjack and yellowfin tuna certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) within our chain of custody.  In January 2015, FCF made a public commitment to adhere to MSC sustainability standards while trading tuna harvested from PNA waters. Under the agreement, FCF ensures traceability and reporting of fish harvesting, transportation, and processing into semi-finished and finished products.

FCF has the largest fleet of PNA MSC certified associated fishing vessels and is the largest supplier of PNA MSC skipjack and yellowfin tuna.  FCF vessels are also registered with the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation’s (ISSF) Proactive Vessels Registry, which provides validation that tuna purchased by its members are meeting the ISSF sustainable standard.
